alfama: cemetery of kisses

cemetery of kisses, there is still fire in your tombs,
still the fruited boughs burn, pecked at by birds.

– pablo neruda –

alfama is the medieval quarter of lisbon. with its narrowed cobbled hills and tiny alleys and houses that keep you wondering if they will stand another day, even though they’ve been there for centuries, always captures me. i could walk around here for hours, looking at old houses, people leaning out of their windows hanging their laundry, singing and drinking coffee (bica). walking around here gives me a romantic, but kind of sad feeling. but then again, this is a feeling that keep occurring in lisbon.
